James Eccles

James is a versatile Sydney-based violist. As an early-music specialist, he works with groups such as The Australian Haydn Ensemble, Pinchgut Opera, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. As a keen champion of the music of today, James has premiered many new works over the years with groups like Ensemble Offspring. He has also commissioned a number of new Australian works as director of the 2014 Aurora Festival of Living Music and co-director of The NOISE – a string quartet which has made improvisation its core artistic focus. The NOISE is 2015 Ensemble in Residence at ANU, and has received glowing SMH reviews for its CDs, and will soon have an epic 6-hour-long recording of Georges Lentz’s music released on NAXOS and a recording of Paul Cutlan’s music released on Tall Poppies.
